Biography
Giedre joined the School of Law at the University of Glasgow in September 2018. Prior to this, she was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate on the AHRC-funded project 'Constructing Authority in International Law' at Durham Law School. She completed her PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2016. Before joining academia in the UK, she worked as a civil society advocate in Lithuania, Ukraine, Cameroon and Germany. In 2019 Giedre was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Rosario (Botoga, Colombia), and a visiting Teaching Fellow at the University of KIMEP (Almaty, Kazakhstan).
Her current research focuses on the link between bottom-up resistance, international law and sustainable development. Since 2020, she is a Principle Investigator on the AHRC/DFG-funded research project 'The Law of Protracted Conflict: Understanding Humanitarian-Development Divide' (Endless Conflicts).
Research interests
Giedre’s most recent research has been on the concept of ‘affected people’ and how this new paradigm of global governance is used by financial institutions and grassroot organisations in the context of development interventions.
Starting February 2020, Giedre is a Principal Investigator on the AHRC/DFG-funded research project 'The Law of Protracted Conflict: Understanding Humanitarian-Development Divide' (Endless Conflicts), together with Asli Olcay (Co-I) (Glasgow), conducted in partnership with FU Berlin. Giedre will focus on the issues of accountability that arise at the intersction of development and humanitarian legal regimes, conducting research and knowledge exchange activities in Colombia, DRC, and the UN Headquarters in Geneva.
Giedre also has ongoing research projects on:
- a possibility of stakeholder engagement in development projects through mediation (with Catherine Turner, University of Durham)
- a role of law in grassroots resistance to development projects in Latin America (with Johanna Cortes Nieto, Unversity of Rosario)
- a link between land rights and environmental impact assessment (with Justine Bendel, University of Exeter).
From a theoretical perspective, Giedre is interested in the topics related to global distributive justice, alternative epistomologies, private ordering and responsibility; and normativity (particularly the distinction between legal and other normative orders).

Supervision
I would be interested in the doctoral research projects that explore the theoretical underpinnings of international and/or transnational law; local resistance strategies to global governance; legal strategies of resistance against development and moderinisation; the negotiation, regulation and implementation of international agreements (especially investor-state contracts); climate finance (including 'blue' finance) and also other topics that engage with relationship between environment, development and foreign investment from a legal perspective. At the moment my capacity to accept new PhD proposals is very limited, but I'd be eager to engage with you and in some instances might be able to give some feedback on the promising research ideas.
